| Synthetic OilsLubricating oil has traditionally been made by combining a mineral oil base which is refined from crude oil, and a number of additives designed to modify and improve the base oil's natural characteristics. While mineral oils are quite suitable for most applications, more server duties call for improvements in particular areas.
Polyalphaolefin or PAO for short, is not the only synthetic, there are a number of alternatives, but it is the one developed over 50 years ago by Mobil, and one that is still head and shoulders above the rest. PAO is expensive to produce, costing a considerable amount more to produce than mineral base stock, but it gives those oils made from its superb properties that are simply not attainable from any other base stock. |
Some advantages of Fully Synthetic Oils
- Lower oil consumption.
- Reduced friction
- Improved fuel consumption
- Longer drain period

Summing up, synthetic base oils have naturally lower viscosity than mineral stock and used with compatible additives, synthetic oils exhibit much greater stability and ability to stay in grade, making them particularly applicable for long drain interval use.
